Research

I am currently writing and researching in the area of the philosophy of technology, education and cultural critique.

Central to my research is a critique of technocapitalism. I argue for a deeper understanding of human freedom and subjectivity that highlights our precarity in the face of market forces supercharged by technology.

My work sits at the intersection of Adornian critical theory, Friedrich Schiller’s idealsim, Lacanian psychoanalysis, Simondon and Stiegler’s theories of technology, Luhmann’s systems theory, Vygotsky’s developmentalism, and postructuralism (Deleuze, Foucault). Mark Fisher is another key influence.

I include below a link to the paperback version of my recent book of philosophical essays (free pdf available at rogaire.com) along with my TESOL project.

Technoethics

Ten essays examining how our digital environment captures and processes our attention, threatening to “disindividuate” us. Drawing on existentialism, critical theory, and biosemiotics, this work offers itself as an “Enzymatic Knowledge Machine” (EKM) designed  to catalyze active reflection against the “Anesthesizing Information Machines” (AIMs) of the market. See also my developing online EKM.

Key topics:

The Ontology of Freedom: Distinguishing between “nominal freedom”, the mere availability of choice and “ontological freedom”, agency integral to human subjectivity.

Digital “Faciality”: How social media and AI use facial simulacra to manipulate empathy and capture our attention as labour.

The Posthuman Transition: A speculative look at the shift from Homo Sapiens to Homo Techne and the potential “death of time” in a world of maximum entropy.

Poetic Resistance: Why art and creative self-expression are essential to maintaining human quality in a hyper-symbolized world.
